Living in Winton, Bournemouth

Winton is located just over one mile north of Bournemouth town centre. It’s a busy suburb, popular for shopping, with a delightful farmers’ market taking place on the third Saturday of every the month in Cardigan Road. There’s some beautiful and striking buildings on the high street including the old Fire Station on Peter’s Hill, Saint Luke’s Church and what was the art-deco Moderne Cinema building, now known as the Lifecentre.

Who lives in Winton?

Winton is a popular area for families due to its great selection of primary and secondary schools. There’s a fabulous annual carnival where local schools and businesses get involved, giving a real sense of community to the area. It’s also a popular area for students from Bournemouth University and the Arts University, due to its close proximity to Talbot Campus and easy connections in to Bournemouth Town Centre.

Properties to rent and buy in Winton

Winton is mainly made up of detached houses circa 1900’s. Mixed in with these there are modern developments dotted around offering apartment living. In the quiet residential roads you will have no issue with finding on-road parking; parking becomes more difficult the closer you get to the high street. Family homes will often benefit from off-road parking.

Parks and green spaces

There’s a fantastic park in Winton Recreation Ground. Facilities include; tennis courts; a cycle track; children’s playground and a cricket pitch. The cricket pavilion is over 90 years old and it was extended in 1962 and refurbished in 1999. Winton Rec is a Green Flag winner and a much loved community area.

 

Swimming, fitness and sports

BH Live Active operate the main swimming and fitness centre in the area, located on Stokewood road. A 25 yard pool, 50 station gym and over 70 classes  to choose from, home to various local sports clubs and a hub of recreation in Winton. If you’re looking for something a little more special then check out The West Hants Club, located less than a mile away from Winton. Famed for its tennis facilities and boasting extensive leisure and fitness facilities.   

Doctors and Dentists in Winton

Winton benefits from two GP practices, Denmark Road Medical Centre at one end and Alma Medical Centre at the other. There’s also tons of alternative and complementary therapies available, from massage to acupuncture. Mydentist on Pine road, Bennett Dental on Castle Road and Knibbs & Doman at the top of Wimborne Road, are just some of the dental practices to choose from.

Shopping in Winton

There’s a huge range of shops along Winton’s main high street and adjoining side roads. Tesco Express, Sainsbury's Local, Lidl and Waitrose make up your big name supermarkets, but there’s also loads of smaller shops such as butchers, bakers and international cuisine specialists, and even a shop that sells only chillies! There’s something for everyone in Winton and far too much for us to list here.

Hair and beauty

In recent years there’s been an upsurge in men’s barbers opening up across Winton and other areas in Bournemouth.   We’ve not counted but we’re confident there’s upwards of 8 or more along the main stretch. Add to that, plenty of women’s hair and beauty salons and you are really spoilt for choice if you’re looking for a pamper.

Eating out in Winton

There’s probably too much choice when it comes to eating out or takeaways! It’s got a huge number of restaurants, chains and independents. Indian, Chinese, burgers, fried chicken, Thai, fish and chips…the list goes on. Simply, you won’t go hungry and will find it hard to get bored.

Winton’s transport links

Winton benefits from great bus links running regularly into Bournemouth Town Centre and Bournemouth Train and Coach Stations. From Winton you can get directly to most parts of Bournemouth and Poole, on either a Yellow or More Bus.
